Noise-induced hearing loss is 100% preventable but once it is acquired hearing loss is permanent and irreversible
The maximum acceptable occupational noise level is 85 decibels
A normal conversation is about 60 decibels Sound level doubles every 3 decibels (i.e. 88dB is twice as loud as 85dB)
The sound from a hand drill, spray painter and bulldozer ranges between 95 and 105 decibels
The noise from a jackhammer three feet away is 120 decibels, while the noise from a jet taking off is 140 decibels
The amount of hearing a person loses depends on the loudness of the sound, its frequency and the length of time one is exposed to it
Studies have shown that some 30% of young adults entering the workforce have already suffered some hearing damage due to noise
Workers who suffer hearing loss also experience symptoms such as fatigue, emotional problems, stress, high blood pressure, social isolation and sleep disorders
Recent data indicates that there is a direct correlation between noise levels and the increase of workplace accidents |
